Production diary

Filming day #1

The day we started filming on was Saturday 30th November 2013. This day was used to film the second part of our sequence, the day scenes. This was the only time we could all do, in the day so it was light that was before the filming deadline, so it was important we got all the shot done in time and to a good standard. On a whole i believe the day of filming went well as we got all the shots done and most of them to a good standard. I suggested that we used a low angle shot for the shot when i removed the cover of Aaron. This suggested to the audience that there was a dead body there but as we didn't have sufficient funds it would have been difficult to make a dead body look realistic so this shot worked well.

However once we had started making a rough cut we have seen that there is one shot we need to improve and we need to make a new shot as well.

Filming day #2

The second day we filmed was Monday 2nd December 2013. We all met at bens house at half 5 and waited half an hour as his mum and dad were going out. We then started filming the night scenes of our opening sequence. We still had a lot of shots to take but we got it all done that night. I wasn't in the film this time as the detective turns up the following day so I helped with the filming. The very first shot i helped to direct. The shot where Ben was breaking into the house i told him where to stand and how to approach the house. I then suggested using an over the shoulder shot to show him fiddling with the door handle. By doing this it represents him as a typical 'dodgy' burglar. We know by this he intends to enter the house.

As a group we were happy we got all the filming done in two days as this gave us some extra time to do the shot list and start editing.

Filming day #3

Once we had finished our rough cut edit we realised there was a couple of shots we could refilm to make it look better and improve continuity. On this day though the weather was very poor outside so obviously we couldn't have one shot of it raining and the next it not raining, therefore we had to rearrange another filming day.

Filming day #4

2.      tracking shot of bag in wind stops at burglars feet

3.      panning shot on tripod of bag in wind stops at burglars feet

4.      c/u of feet walking on curb

5.      l/s of burglar walking to house

6.      c/u of burglar opening the door

9.      (day) Ben and josh talking upon josh’s arrival

7.      m/s of burglar walking to kitchen

8.      c/u of burglar taking phone and keys

Aaron created this shot list for filming day four. This was so we could get some more shots to improve our opening sequence. Some shots were designed to replace ones we already had, whilst others were going to be added in. For example the close up of the burglars feet was going to be added in to create tension.

On filming day four we attempted to film all the shots in the shot list, however when we analysed what effect the new shots would add to the sequence we realised that if we added in the shot where the burglar walks into the kitchen he would have to walk past the open door with the light on which would realistically be impossible for him to not see the tied up victims. Our whole story would then be blown! This would mean we would have to eliminate that element and re film most of the first scene to hint that there is a murderer in the house. Another problem we faced with the new shot list was the plastic bag shots. Firstly we had no control over the wind and secondly it was quite difficult to film the bags flight steadily and well framed.

Improvements

The first shot we need to add is of me walking from coming in the door to getting to the position i am whilst speaking to Ben (the policeman). We didnt realise we were missing this shot untill we put the two together. To try and prevent us having to refilm we tried to add a fade between the two, however this did look very poor and there was no continuity.

The second shot we need to refilm is where the shot cuts from behind me, to over my shoulder. The cut doesnt flow as it takes a shot from one angle then cuts to another, resulting in no continuity. We want to refilm so that the scene is smoother and has good continuity.

After completing our rough cut in the editing phase we singled out a few elements of the production we were not happy with and therefore wanted to change. For example one of the shots ends in one position and the next shot starts a few yards away, we attempted to smooth over the transition with a cross fade but we decided it did not look up to standard so we got together, decided what we wanted to changed and Aaron created this list:

•Fix audio and add white noise sound effect at 0:54 - 1:02,

•Add some sort of build up effect at 1:02,

 •Fix transitions at 1:22, 1:44 and 1:56,

 •Add in shots between 00008 and 00009,

 •Film an establishing shot,

•Re-film shot 00025 as it lacks some continuity (shot jumps a few inches).

Colour Correction

One of the Adobe Premiere Pro CS6's highlights is the improved Three-Way Color Corrector. It now allows for visual colour correction across the board for shadows, midtones and highlights, and you can switch workspaces to maximise the amount of space available to it.olour Correction.

In shot 00002 I used colour correction to darken the shot a little. In our rough cut we decided that the sky was a little to light and there were to many reflections in the detectives car. I edited the output and input levels to make the whole picture look a little darker.

In conclusion the colour correction did work, especially for this particular scene. This first shot of the day scene we wanted to make it look a little dark and gloomy outside, not bright. This sets the mood for the audience as a little dull, after all there has just been 3 murders in the same night. To begin with we found the colour correction a little difficult to get the hang of, as we weren't quite sure what all the tools did. However after playing around with them all for a while, and getting a little help from YouTube, we got the darker effect we were after. By using colour correction it has also saved us from refilming the shot on a naturally darker.

Refilming

To make improvements to our opening sequence we will refilm a couple of scenes. Tonight we will film Ben breaking into the house again. However this time he will have a bag and go into the kitchen and steal a phone and wallet. This will make it clearer to the audience that he is a burglar. Once he has stolen the phone and wallet he will then proceed to walk up the stairs. Tonight while it is dark outside we will also film a bag blowing down the street and end up at the burglars feet. We hope this will cause some tension before the main actions starts. It will make the audience think that something is about to happen. On Saturday 11th we will also refilm the conversation me and Ben have on my arrival to the house. We will be using a boom mic as our previous footage you couldn't really hear us as the wind blocked our voices.

 Editing

Most of the editing in our team was done by Will and Aaron as they have had a lot of past experience with the software used as they took Media last year. However I wanted to help out and have a go myself. Therefore in the early stage of the video I completed some editing. I edited the scene from myself getting out of the car to mine and Bens conversation. It was from this bit of editing we realised we had to refilm our conversation inside as we had missed a shot. I tried crossfading the two shots but it was obvious there was one missing as the continuity was poor. We had to refilm this part. I then showed Aaron my editing and he added (and showed me how to do so) in a fade up from the cut to black from the previous shot firstly to show a change in scene but also a change in tempo.

Titles

Aaron and Will created a animated title on adobe after effects as  is it appears in most productions showing the films title and the production company. Aaron made the film title and Will Sharp created the production company logo. To do this he first made multiple copies of the title image and edited them by adding varying levels of distortion.

This layer has higher levels of distortion. Aaron did this by increasing the amplitude on the wave distortion filter. He made a few different layers varying from little distortion to maximum, which was almost unreadable! He then added the title into our opening sequence along with some accompanying static sound so that the visuals on screen would be matched by the audio heard.
